Day 1: Rhinos, Roaring Falls & Sunset on the Savannah

You leave early—before Kampala stirs and start the transfer heading north through the countryside as the sun stretches across the sugarcane fields. After about 3 hours of driving, you arrive at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the only place in Uganda where you can walk within meters of these prehistoric giants.

Guided by rangers, you step quietly through the bush. Then—there they are huge, calm and threatening. Breathing in the same silence as you. It’s not just thrilling; it’s grounding.

After the encounter, continue to Murchison Falls National Park, arriving in time to hike to the Top of the Falls. Here, the Nile squeezes itself through a 7-meter rock cleft and crashes 43 meters below—roaring, wild, unapologetic. Mist coats your face. The ground shakes beneath your boots.

Later in the afternoon, you’ll head out for a game drive on the northern savanna plains. You may catch elephants lumbering past, giraffes casting long shadows, or a lion pride basking in the last light of day.

It’s your best chance to catch predators on the move. Look for jackals darting through the grass, hyenas skulking, and perhaps the flick of a leopard’s tail disappearing into the brush.

Later in the morning, have another opportunity to sightsee the Muchison Falls aquatics in a remarkable boat safari. Sightsee the Nile crocodiles, hippos, water buffaloes and more and when the day is approaching midday, you begin your drive back to Kampala or Entebbe, arriving in the early evening—mud on your shoes, wind in your hair, and a wildness in your eyes.
